As castas que dão identidade aos vinhos da Adega Cooperativa da Labrugeira

The identity of a wine is born in the vineyard. That's where it all begins: in the soil, the climate, the exposure and, above all, in the grape varieties that give rise to it. At the Labrugeira Cooperative Winery, located in the Lisbon region, next to the Serra de Montejunto mountain range, we work daily with a range of grape varieties that represent the best of our territory and are the basis for the quality, freshness and character of our wines.

The diversity of grape varieties, combined with the region's natural conditions and the knowledge accumulated over generations, allows us to produce balanced, versatile wines with a strong connection to their origin. Discover some of the main grape varieties that are part of our wines, both white and red.

White grape varieties: freshness, aroma and balance

Among the white grape varieties, Fernão Pires plays a central role in our production. It is one of the most representative varieties of the Lisbon region and stands out for its high yield capacity and aromatic intensity. Wines made from this variety reveal notes of citrus fruits, such as lime and lemon, as well as hints of tangerine and aromatic herbs. When harvested at the right time, Fernão Pires yields fresh, balanced and very expressive wines, and is also an excellent variety for blending.

Arinto is another variety of great importance at Adega da Labrugeira. Nationally recognized for its high natural acidity, it is responsible for giving freshness, vivacity, and longevity to the wines. Arinto wines have a great capacity for aging, maintaining their structure and character over the years. It is a fundamental variety for balancing blends and ensuring elegant and gastronomic wines.

Of lesser expression, but with great aromatic impact, we find Muscatel. This is a very distinctive variety from a sensory point of view, with intense and easily recognizable aromas. Even in small percentages, it imparts floral notes, lychee, pear, and linden. When used in fortified wines, it preserves acidity well and adds aromatic complexity, with hints of honey, orange, and spices.

Vital is a native Portuguese white grape variety, deeply linked to the Lisbon region and particularly adapted to the conditions of the Serra de Montejunto mountain range. Resistant to maritime influence and wind, it produces wines with moderate alcohol content, balanced acidity, and a delicate profile. These are fruity, harmonious wines that clearly benefit from bottle aging, gaining complexity with evolution.

Finally, Seara-Nova is a productive and important grape variety in the region. The wines have a medium to high alcohol content, moderate acidity, and fruity aromas with some complexity, making them a good option for balanced and versatile wines.

Red grape varieties: structure, intensity and character

Among red grape varieties, Castelão stands out as one of the most emblematic of the region. Extremely well adapted to different soils and climatic conditions, it is a constant presence in red wine blends and also in the production of rosés. When harvested at full ripeness, it yields intense, full-bodied wines with aromatic notes of wild berries, reflecting well the character of the region.

Touriga Nacional , considered one of Portugal's noble grape varieties, also plays an important role in our wines. Despite its naturally low production, it stands out for its concentration of color, structure, and aromatic richness. The wines exhibit balance, intensity, and excellent aging potential, both as single varietal wines and in batches.

Aragonez , known in other regions as Tinta Roriz, is one of the most widespread grape varieties in the Iberian Peninsula. Highly adaptable to different climates and soils, it produces wines with good color, high alcohol content, and intense, complex aromas. With lower acidity, it is a variety that contributes to structured wines with aging potential.

Syrah is establishing itself in the region due to the quality of the wines it produces. Its wines exhibit great aromatic concentration, with notes of red fruits and small berries, good structure, body, and balanced alcohol content. They are highly appreciated by consumers, both in the domestic market and for export, whether as single varietal wines or blends.

Alicante Bouschet , a teinturier grape variety prominent in the region, is recognized for its intense color, robust structure, and aromatic profile marked by wild berries. In batch production, it adds volume, concentration, and great aging potential to the wines.

Finally, Touriga Franca , with its more moderate expression, stands out for its versatility and consistent production. The wines exhibit high color intensity, good structure, and floral and wild berry aromas, contributing to elegant and balanced blends.

An identity built in the vineyard.

At the Labrugeira Cooperative Winery, each grape variety is cultivated with respect for its identity and the territory where it is expressed. It is the combination of these varieties, along with technical knowledge and accumulated experience, that allows us to create authentic wines, representative of the Lisbon region and designed for different consumption occasions.

We invite you to discover our wines and recognize, in each glass, the character of the grape varieties from which they originate.
